Two years of the East Finland Berry and Vegetable Project: an offshoot of the North Karelia Project
University of Joensuu Finland Department of Epidemiology, National Public Health Institute Helsinki, Finland North Karelia Project Field Office, North Karelia County Department for Social and Health Affairs Joensuu, Finland Project Steering Committee, Department of Epidemiology, National Public Health Institute Helsinki, Finland The East Finland Berry and Vegetable Project was launched in 1986 on the initiative of the North Karelia Project, as a broad cooperative effort to increase the consumption of domestic berry and vegetable products. The justification of the Project was the obvious health benefits of these products. The Project aims to combine health interests with several national and regional economic interests. The increased consumption of domestic berries and vegetables was seen as an important structural health intervention, providing opportunities for the economical production of healthy food as a substitute for dairy farming, which has declined because of the continuously reduced consumption of dairy products. This article describes the progress of this multisectoral approach, embracing agriculture, commerce and industry, in the field of food and health policy.
