Promoting good sleep

The author discusses the concept, assessment and promotion of good sleep. The significance of good sleep for mental well-being and health is presented, based on the sleep habit surveys in Finland. it is recommended that the strategy of sleep promotion and counselling should be substantiated with available scientific data rather than with public opinion and cultural tradition only. The author gives some guidelines for improving sleep quality.
