Early experiences from the Kirseberg Public Health Project in Malmö, Sweden An alcohol prevention campaign

This article reports on a pilot demonstration to implement an alcohol reduction campaign in the community of Kirseberg (population 10 000) located in Malmö, Sweden. Begun in 1988, this public health project integrates many aspects of the comprehensive community based models for heart disease and cancer prevention reported in the literature during the past two decades. Utilizing a five stage model of preventive action, the paper details the intervention activities and experiences encountered during the early phases of community implementation. Overall, the project hypothesizes a 25% reduction in alcohol use by the year 2000 and the prevention of alcohol related problems. The various theoretical bases supporting the interventions are discussesed The role of local organizations and citizen groups actively involved in this partnership strategy is described. Project objectives and evaluation plans are presented.
