SUMMARY

Over the past 25 years, health education has moved from holding a peripheral position in health care to taking centre stage in health promotion, disease prevention and health maintenance. Four clearly identifiable stages are outlined in this paper, through a recognition of the major issues shaping this field in Australia. Following the tracing of this evolution, some ideas on future directions are outlined.

Key words: health education; Health For All; new public health
